“England would have been in a much better position to break Ghana down if Palmer had been available on the bench.

When Bellingham and Rice are playing between the lines against a deep defence, you either need moments of magic from distance or far more from your wingers than England are currently getting.

Rice and Bellingham bring power and energy, but they aren’t players who naturally unlock tight spaces.

The longer the game went on, the more you looked at the bench and wondered who could come on and change it.

If this continues, there will be a real debate about Palmer’s absence. Games like this are exactly why many of us felt England needed him as an option.”
