Chelsea Midfielder Cole Palmer Endures Difficult Evening for England in 1-0 Defeat to Japan

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer had a night to forget as England suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Japan in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The 23-year-old, starting in the No. 10 role, was substituted in the 59th minute as manager Thomas Tuchel looked to change the momentum of a match that saw Japan claim a historic first-ever victory over England on English soil.

Japan took the lead in the 23rd minute through Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma, who finished clinically following a swift counter-attack. Palmer was dispossessed in midfield, allowing Mitoma to surge forward and combine with Keito Nakamura before slotting the ball past Jordan Pickford.

Despite showing flashes of his usual creativity early on, Palmer struggled to impose himself on the game, with England failing to register a shot on target until after his withdrawal alongside Phil Foden. Tuchel later acknowledged that both attacking players "struggled to make a difference" in a system that lacked the expected width and penetration.

The defeat marks England's second international of the March window and comes as Tuchel prepares to finalise his squad for the upcoming World Cup. With Harry Kane absent, the Three Lions looked laboured, and the home crowd made their frustration known at full time.

In very unlikely fashion, Cole Palmer failed to register a single successful dribble, failing on both occasions. He was also dispossessed once, which led to the goal.

As well as this, Palmer had 40 touches, a passing accuracy percentage of 77, created two chances, three crosses and failed his only accurate long ball attempt.

On the defensive side of things he made just one recovery, won two out of five duels and was fouled on two occasions.

A slightly concerning performance for those who hoped Cole Palmer had return to his best after an impressive cameo against Uruguay last time out.

England will now turn their attention to the next phase of preparation, with Tuchel expected to name his World Cup squad in May.

Marc Cucurella: Reece James is the world’s strongest full-back

Reece James’ hamstring injury is a massive blow, and it was exacerbated by Trevoh Chalobah’s ankle problem against PSG. Perhaps Marc Cucurella’s latest claim explains why Chelsea are struggling.

Without James, it is clear that Chelsea are far worse. Not only do the Blues lack his quality on the ball and his versatility in both defence and in midfield, but the 26-year-old’s leadership. Also, maybe his strength?

Cucurella was asked by The Athletic’s TikTok page to create his perfect full-back, and when it came to strength, the Spanish defender picked James as the physically strongest full-back currently in football.

The former Brighton defender picked himself for tackling and aerial duels, while Dani Carvajal was chosen for leadership. Trent Alexander-Arnold got his vote for crossing, and Alejandro Balde for speed.

When club football returns, Chelsea take on League One side Port Vale in the FA Cup, the first time the two sides have done battle in 97 years. Realistically, James was always likely to be rested for it anyway.

Then, Chelsea take on Man City at Stamford Bridge and that is a game Rosenior would love to have James available to play in. But reports say that Chelsea are hoping James will return against Manchester United.

That means another two games missed by James, but in the grand scheme of things, it is not the end of the world. James will be available – fingers crossed – for six of Chelsea’s remaining seven league games.

Chelsea Defender Marc Cucurella Criticises Club’s Decision to Sack Enzo Maresca

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella has openly questioned the club’s decision to part company with former head coach Enzo Maresca, stating that players “would die for him” and that the change came too early.

In a frank interview, the Spain international expressed strong loyalty to Maresca, who guided Chelsea to UEFA Europa Conference League and Club World Cup success during his 18-month tenure before leaving the club in January 2026.

“When a manager gives you that confidence and offers you a platform to fight for titles, you’d die for him,” Cucurella said. “The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision.”

Cucurella added that such a mid-season change disrupts stability and suggested waiting until the end of the season would have been better for players and any incoming manager.

Maresca’s departure followed a reported breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy amid a challenging Premier League run, despite earlier trophy successes.

Cucurella’s comments reflect the sense of loss felt by some players after the Italian coach’s exit.

Thomas Tuchel expects better from Cole Palmer

According to The Athletic, Thomas Tuchel hasn’t been best pleased with the amount of contributions players like Cole Palmer have made at their clubs this season.

While Cole Palmer remains a focal point at Chelsea with 10 goals in all competitions, his campaign has been hampered by niggling groin and hamstring injuries, limiting his availability for Tuchel’s early camps.

The England boss has been vocal about the big competition for the number ten role, with as many as five players fighting for one spot.

“I would love them to have more numbers. Meaning Bukayo (Saka), Noni (Madueke), Ebs (Eberechi Eze), Anthony Gordon, even Cole Palmer, and even Morgan Rogers. Not Jude (Bellingham) but Phil Foden. Who is producing, like Harry, these outstanding numbers? Who’s deciding games?”

As well as the niggling injuries, Cole Palmer has been used out wide, opposed to his favourite and best position in the number 10 role, which hasn’t helped his cause.

As previously mentioned, a series of persistent physical setbacks, most notably a recurring groin injury that sidelined him for significant periods, have prevented him from finding the rhythm.

These fitness issues have seen him miss over 15 games across all competitions, robbing Chelsea of their primary creator during critical stretches.

Beyond injuries, the tactical shift under head coach Liam Rosenior has altered Palmer’s influence. Following Enzo Maresca’s departure in January, Rosenior’s system has often moved Palmer into wider roles to accommodate Enzo Fernandez centrally.

This move away from the number 10 position has seen his assist numbers stall, with only one league assist by late March. Combined with the heavy fatigue from a schedule that included the 2025 Club World Cup, Palmer is fighting a battle against both his own body and a system that currently limits him.

Tino Livramento Sends Warm ‘Unbelievable’ Message to Injured England Rival Reece James Amid Right-Back Battle for 2026 World Cup

Newcastle United defender **Tino Livramento** has described Chelsea captain **Reece James** as an “unbelievable player” and expressed his hope for a swift recovery, as the two English right-backs continue to compete for a key role in Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

James, widely regarded as England’s first-choice right-back when fit, is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in recent weeks. The setback has opened the door for competition at the position, with Livramento, along with others such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Djed Spence, vying for minutes and a place in the final 26-man squad for this summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking candidly about the situation, Livramento paid generous tribute to his international rival, highlighting James’ quality and the respect he commands within the England setup.

“Reece is an unbelievable player and I hope he comes back as soon as possible,” Livramento said.

The 23-year-old Newcastle full-back, who has impressed in recent appearances for club and country, downplayed any suggestion that James’ absence automatically boosts his own chances. When asked if he was solely focused on displacing the Chelsea man, Livramento replied: “Not necessarily.”

Livramento has featured regularly for Newcastle this season and earned further recognition under Tuchel, showcasing his versatility, athleticism, and ability to play across the back line. His composed performances have positioned him as a serious contender for the right-back berth, especially given James’ recurring fitness concerns over recent years.

Despite the healthy competition for places, Livramento’s comments reflect the strong spirit and mutual respect within the England squad as they prepare for the biggest stage in world football.

Reece James has been a pivotal figure for England since breaking through, known for his leadership, defensive solidity, crossing ability, and attacking threat from the right flank. However, persistent injury issues have limited his availability, making squad selection a complex puzzle for head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel has previously indicated that James remains his preferred option at right-back when fully fit, but the manager has also been impressed by the depth and quality of alternatives in the squad.

Livramento’s message comes as England continue their “Road to 2026” preparations, with the friendly results and squad performances providing vital information for the final squad selection.

The classy exchange between the two players underscores the professional and supportive environment within the national team, even as positions remain fiercely contested.

Thomas Tuchel Explains Preference for Trevoh Chalobah Over Harry Maguire in England Centre-Back Hierarchy

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has openly addressed the current pecking order among his centre-backs, stating that Chelsea defender **Trevoh Chalobah** holds an edge over Manchester United’s **Harry Maguire**, primarily due to superior mobility.

Speaking after England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley Stadium, Tuchel was candid about his defensive selections as the team builds toward the **2026 FIFA World Cup**. While acknowledging Maguire’s experience and aerial strengths, the German tactician made it clear that several younger or more dynamic options currently rank ahead in his thinking.

“I haven’t changed my mind [on Maguire], but I see other players I like to start for us,” Tuchel said. “I see other players ahead with a different profile. I see Ezri Konsa ahead. I see Marc Guehi ahead. It’s no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah, on the level of mobility, was slightly ahead of him.”

Tuchel, who began his role as England manager in January 2025, has been reshaping the squad with a focus on tactical flexibility and modern defensive attributes. Chalobah, who earned his first senior cap under Tuchel in June 2025, is highly regarded for his pace, ball-carrying ability, and composure on the ball — qualities that align with Tuchel’s preference for defenders comfortable in build-up play and transitions.

The 26-year-old Chalobah has impressed at club level with Chelsea this season, though he is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained against Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the setback, Tuchel’s comments suggest the former academy graduate remains firmly in his plans.

In contrast, the experienced 33-year-old Maguire was recalled to the squad and started against Uruguay — his first England appearance in 18 months. Tuchel highlighted Maguire’s value in specific scenarios, particularly in knockout football:

“He has an asset that can also be super-important in a tournament, in defending a lead and chasing a game with crosses and long throw-ins and set-pieces.”

Tuchel also noted that John Stones would typically feature higher in the hierarchy but has been affected by injuries, which opened the door for Maguire to join the recent camp for assessment of his integration within the group.

The comments come as England continue their preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. Tuchel has previously extended his contract with the Football Association through to UEFA Euro 2028, signaling a long-term vision for the Three Lions.

Mamadou Sarr and Nicolas Jackson shined in Senegal’s 2-0 win against Peru

Jackson opened the scoring for Senegal and had a good game overall. Sofascore gave Jackson a match rating of 7.5, with the Bayern loanee testing Peru’s goalkeeper on more than one occasion.

In total, Jackson took four shots before being substituted just before the 70th minute. Three of those shots were on target, so his shooting was quite accurate, which is not always the case.

As for Sarr, he did not do too much wrong either. His Sofascore rating was 7.3 after making six defensive actions. Only three players managed to register more than the 20-year-old.

Sarr also made four interceptions, which was the most in the game. Despite Chelsea’s recent struggles and not being a regular starter, Sarr has no regrets about leaving Strasbourg for their sister club.

In the future, perhaps Sarr will win a place in Chelsea’s first XI. Jackson, on the other hand, is unlikely to be named in it ever again.

Jackson remaining at Chelsea is not impossible once his loan at Bayern is finished, but everything is pointing towards the former Villarreal man leaving the club again in the summer.

Next season, Liam Rosenior will have Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Emanuel Emegha to call upon as things stand, while Chelsea could also go out and buy another centre-forward before then.

Marc Cucurella Delivers Solid All-Round Display as Spain Cruise to 3-0 Friendly Victory Over Serbia

Spain left-back **Marc Cucurella** produced a composed and energetic performance throughout the full 90 minutes as **La Roja** comfortably defeated Serbia 3-0 in an international friendly at Estadio de la Cerámica on Friday night.

The Chelsea defender started at left-back in Luis de la Fuente’s 4-2-3-1 formation and contributed effectively in both defensive and attacking phases. Early in the match, Cucurella tested the Serbian goalkeeper with a dangerous long-range shot that sailed just over the crossbar, signalling Spain’s attacking intent from the flanks.

Cucurella helped anchor a solid backline alongside Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsí, and Marcos Llorente, restricting Serbia to very few clear chances. His positional discipline, overlapping runs, and ability to link play with the midfield and attack were key features of his display. He completed the match without substitution, logging high-intensity minutes as Spain controlled proceedings from start to finish.

Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 16th minute and added a second just before half-time to give Spain a commanding 2-0 lead at the break. Víctor Muñoz sealed the victory with a third goal in the 71st minute, completing a confident warm-up result for the reigning European champions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Cucurella’s consistent performances for both club and country have reinforced his status as a reliable and versatile option at left-back. His ability to contribute offensively while maintaining defensive solidity has been particularly valuable in Spain’s fluid, possession-dominant style.

Speaking after the match, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente acknowledged the collective effort but highlighted the importance of experienced players like Cucurella in maintaining balance: “Marc did very well today. He gave us width, defended strongly, and was always an option going forward. These types of performances help us build confidence and cohesion as we prepare for the summer.”

Cucurella himself expressed satisfaction with the result and the team’s progression: “It was a good team performance. We controlled the game well and created good chances. Personally, I felt sharp and enjoyed contributing to the clean sheet and the win. These friendlies are important for rhythm and understanding as we head towards the World Cup.”

The victory provides Spain with a positive boost as they continue their preparations for the 2026 tournament, blending youth and experience in the squad. Cucurella’s assured display further strengthens his claims for a starting role when competitive action resumes.

Ecuador Manager Sebastián Beccacece Urges FIFA to Overturn Moises Caicedo’s Suspension for 2026 World Cup Opener

Ecuador national team head coach **Sebastián Beccacece** has made a passionate appeal to FIFA, calling on the world governing body to review and overturn the one-match suspension of star midfielder **Moises Caicedo**, enabling the Chelsea player to feature in La Tri’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.

Caicedo, 24, received a red card for two yellow cards during Ecuador’s 1-0 qualifying victory over Argentina in September 2025. The dismissal has resulted in an automatic ban for Ecuador’s Group E clash against Ivory Coast on June 14, 2026, at Philadelphia Stadium in the United States.

Speaking on Thursday, Beccacece described the red card as an “unfair” and “injustice,” stressing that it would be only right for FIFA to allow one of Ecuador’s most important players to participate in the tournament’s opening match.

“Caicedo’s sanction was an unfair red card,” Beccacece said. “FIFA will have to review it to find out if we can finally count on him. I don’t know how close or far it is… but hopefully it will happen, because I think it’s something that would be fair.”

The Argentine coach, who has transformed Ecuador into a competitive force since taking charge in August 2024, underlined Caicedo’s pivotal role in the team’s midfield. The energetic and disciplined Chelsea star has been instrumental in Ecuador’s strong CONMEBOL qualifying campaign, where La Tri secured qualification and established themselves as a potential dark horse for the 2026 tournament.

Beccacece added that having Caicedo available from the first game would significantly boost Ecuador’s chances in a tough group that also includes Curaçao and Germany.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) has formally requested FIFA to wipe the suspension, according to local media reports. A positive decision from FIFA would allow Caicedo to anchor the midfield alongside emerging talents like Kendry Páez in what promises to be a landmark World Cup campaign for the South American nation.

Caicedo has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defensive midfielders at Chelsea and remains a cornerstone of Ecuador’s youthful, high-intensity squad. His absence from the Ivory Coast fixture would be a major blow to Beccacece’s tactical plans.

Ecuador fans and the football community are now awaiting FIFA’s official response as the countdown to the 2026 World Cup intensifies.

Cole Palmer Delivers Sparkling Substitute Display as England Draw 1-1 with Uruguay at Wembley

Chelsea attacking midfielder **Cole Palmer** produced an impressive cameo from the substitutes’ bench as England were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Uruguay side in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium on Friday night.

Palmer entered the field in the 56th minute, replacing Phil Foden, and quickly injected creativity and urgency into England’s play during a match that served as an important World Cup 2026 preparation fixture under head coach Thomas Tuchel.

The 23-year-old was involved in several key moments that shifted momentum in England’s favour. He delivered a dangerous free-kick that should have resulted in a goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who headed wide from close range. Later, Palmer swung in a corner that led directly to **Ben White’s** first international goal in the 81st minute, as the ball flicked on via Harvey Barnes before White tapped home at the far post.

Throughout his 34 minutes on the pitch, Palmer showcased his trademark composure and vision. Statistics from the match highlight his impact: 15 accurate passes, two key passes, four passes into the final third, two accurate crosses, and two successful tackles, along with winning four duels. Fans inside Wembley responded warmly, with chants of his name echoing around the stadium as he influenced proceedings.

Despite England taking the lead late, Uruguay equalised in stoppage time through a Federico Valverde penalty (awarded after Ben White conceded a foul in the box), denying the Three Lions a victory in their penultimate home fixture before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Thomas Tuchel praised Palmer’s contribution: “Cole takes a little more risk in his passes and he brings that creativity we need. He looked bright when he came on and gave us good moments. He is a player who can make a difference.”

Palmer himself reflected positively on his performance: “It’s always special to play at Wembley and represent England. I came on to try and help the team create chances and push for the win. We created good opportunities and it’s disappointing not to take all three points, but we’ll learn from this and keep improving as we build towards the summer.”

The draw provided Tuchel with valuable insights into squad options as England continue their “Road to 2026” preparations. With several fringe and returning players given minutes, the friendly underlined both the depth and areas requiring refinement ahead of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

**Match Summary**

- **Result**: England 1-1 Uruguay

- **Goals**: Ben White (81') – England; Federico Valverde (90+4', penalty) – Uruguay

- **Venue**: Wembley Stadium, London

- **Attendance**: Capacity crowd

Cole Palmer’s assured display has further strengthened his claims for a prominent role in England’s midfield and attacking options as the squad eyes a strong showing at the 2026 World Cup.

Enzo Fernández Scores as Argentina Defeat Mauritania 2-1 in World Cup Warm-Up Friendly at La Bombonera

Chelsea midfielder **Enzo Fernández** opened the scoring with a well-taken goal as the reigning world champions Argentina secured a 2-1 victory over Mauritania in an international friendly played on Friday night at the iconic Estadio Alberto José Armando, La Bombonera.

Fernández netted the opening goal in the 17th minute, showcasing his composure and technical ability in front of a passionate home crowd. Nicolás Paz added a second goal for La Albiceleste shortly before halftime, giving Argentina a commanding 2-0 lead at the break. Mauritania pulled one back early in the second half through Jordan Lefort, but the visitors could not find an equalizer against a disciplined Argentine side.

The match served as an important preparatory fixture for Argentina ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, allowing head coach Lionel Scaloni to assess squad depth and give valuable minutes to key players. Lionel Messi made a second-half substitute appearance, drawing huge cheers from the capacity crowd at La Bombonera and sparking chants urging the captain to pursue a record sixth World Cup appearance.

Fernández, who has been a cornerstone of Argentina’s midfield since the 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, delivered an assured performance. He demonstrated excellent passing range, defensive contributions, and attacking threat, earning high praise from Argentine media outlets for his overall display.

Speaking after the match, Fernández highlighted the importance of maintaining focus even in friendly fixtures: “These games are valuable for building rhythm and testing ourselves. We approached it with full seriousness and professionalism. Scoring early helped us control the game, and it’s always special to contribute for the national team in front of our fans.”

Scaloni expressed satisfaction with the result and the opportunity to rotate his squad: “We wanted a serious performance, and the players delivered. Enzo’s goal set the tone, and we saw good things from several players. Every match helps us prepare better for the challenges ahead in 2026.”

The victory extends Argentina’s strong form as they continue fine-tuning their squad for the defense of their world title. The team is scheduled to face Zambia in another friendly on March 31 at the same venue.

**Match Summary**

- **Result**: Argentina 2-1 Mauritania

- **Goals**: Enzo Fernández (17'), Nicolás Paz (32') – Argentina; Jordan Lefort (49') – Mauritania

Ronald Koeman Justifies Jorrel Hato Selection: “He Is Developing Tremendously and Plays His Matches at Chelsea”

Netherlands national team head coach Ronald Koeman today defended his decision to call up Jorrel Hato for the upcoming international friendlies against Norway and Ecuador, praising the 20-year-old defender’s rapid development and consistent first-team minutes at Chelsea FC despite the Premier League side’s inconsistent campaign.

Hato, who completed a £38 million transfer from Ajax to Chelsea last August on a seven-year contract, has featured in 16 Premier League appearances this season. The versatile Dutchman has been deployed primarily as a left-back or centre-half, gradually establishing himself after an initial period of adaptation under manager Enzo Maresca. His role has grown in significance since Liam Rosenior’s arrival in January, including a first goal for the club in a 5-1 FA Cup victory over Charlton Athletic and recent full 90-minute outings in the league.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Zeist, Koeman addressed questions regarding Hato’s inclusion amid Chelsea’s fluctuating form and the young player’s up-and-down integration into the squad. He revealed that Hato had personally contacted him prior to finalising the move from Ajax, seeking advice on whether the step to the Premier League would guarantee regular playing time.

“He also called me when he could make the transfer to Chelsea,” Koeman said. “Then it’s about whether you are ready for it. Is it the step where you are going to play? He is developing tremendously and is only 20 years old. He is there for a reason, because he plays his matches at Chelsea.”

Koeman emphasised that such consultations from players are not obligatory but reflect a logical desire for guidance on career moves. “It’s not an obligation. It’s not like I tell players when you have a chance to change clubs that they have to call me. But they call and I think it makes sense. It’s about playing time and then I give advice. The advice is often followed.”

The Oranje boss highlighted Hato’s maturity, physicality, technical ability and temperament as key factors in his selection, noting that regular exposure at a top Premier League club — even during a challenging period for the team — demonstrates the defender’s readiness for international duty. At just 20, Hato’s progress since leaving Ajax has been described by Koeman as “wonderful,” underscoring his belief that the youngster’s club performances merit a place in the national squad.

Hato’s call-up comes as the Netherlands prepare for two friendly fixtures that will serve as important preparation ahead of future competitive commitments. Koeman’s squad selection continues to blend experience with emerging talent, and the inclusion of Hato reinforces the coach’s commitment to rewarding players who are earning minutes at the highest level.

Quotes:

- Ronald Koeman, Netherlands Head Coach: “He is developing tremendously and is only 20 years old. He is there for a reason, because he plays his matches at Chelsea.”

- Ronald Koeman on player consultations: “It’s about playing time and then I give advice. The advice is often followed.”

Malo Gusto gets a 6/10 after France’s win over Brazil

France’s 2-1 victory over Brazil at Gillette Stadium served as a vital audition for Malo Gusto ahead of the summer World Cup, with Jules Kounde injured. Starting at right-back, Gusto was tasked with the daunting challenge of neutralizing Vinicius Junior.

He performed admirably for much of the contest, utilising his recovery pace to manage one-on-one situations before France was reduced to ten men following Dayot Upamecano’s 55th-minute red card.

Joao Pedro was introduced for Brazil to chase an equaliser, and he got to see the worst of his Chelsea teammate, with Gusto making mistakes and giving Vinicius too much space in the second half.

Eurosport France were straight out with their player ratings after France’s win against Brazil, but Gusto’s rating wasn’t as good as many would have thought after a win.

‘Opposite him, Vinicius did not exist. So yes, the Brazilian was next to his pumps on Thursday, but the former Lyon player also opposed him with a deterrent presence.

‘Very available during the first half hour, he lacked accuracy in his crosses. Not really intimidated by the context, Gusto still made two mistakes (questionable alignment on the action that led to the expulsion of Upamecano and failed tackle against Luiz Enrique) which sent a real shiver through.

‘In short… It is decidedly the recourse to Jules Kounde.’

This isn’t too dissimilar to our ratings of Gusto so far this season, as we believe he’s been a 6/10 for Chelsea.

Gusto played 91 minutes, completed both of his dribbles, was dispossessed twice, completed 46 out of his 55 passes, made four passes into the final third, had a game-high 74 touches, failed his only cross, made four out of five long balls, two tackles, one interception, four recoveries, one clearance, was dribbled past once and won five out of his 11 duels (FotMob).

Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro rated by the Brazilian media

Andrey Santos was handed a significant opportunity in central midfield alongside Casemiro due to Bruno Guimaraes’ injury. He delivered a disciplined, tidy performance, though he struggled to provide the creative spark needed to break down a resilient French side.

He was eventually substituted in the 71st minute as Carlo Ancelotti chased the game.

Joao Pedro, despite his prolific club form at Chelsea, began the match on the bench. He was introduced in the 63rd minute for Gabriel Martinelli but found himself starved of service.

ESPN Brasil were one of the first outlets to assess what went on in Brazil’s defeat to France.

Both Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro didn’t receive the best reviews, but it was more a projection of the Brazilian team as a whole.

‘Chosen to replace the injured Bruno Guimaraes, Andrey had difficulty finding himself on the field and giving the rhythm that the team needed. Rating: 4.5‘

‘Activated by Ancelotti as a bet to change the offensive dynamics of the team, he had reduced space to show the same football as Chelsea.‘

Joao Pedro and Andrey Santos had to make-do without their international and club teammate Estevao Willian, who wasn’t picked for the Brazil squad due to his injury.

Andrey Santos had 36 touches, completed 27 out of 30 passes, made seven passes into the final third, failed his only long ball, and made two tackles, four recoveries, one clearance, was dribbled past once, won three out of five duels and committed one foul.

Meanwhile, Joao Pedro won two out of six duels, failed both of his dribbles, made one tackle, one interception, three recoveries, and had just 14 touches, made two out of his four passes, was dispossessed twice, and had two touches in the opposition’s box.

Estevao’s World Cup hopes improve as Brazil attackers falter vs France

Brazil were defeated 2-1 by France in a friendly match before the 2026 World Cup, with Chelsea star Estevao Willian not part of the squad.

Ancelotti named Raphinha, Vinicius Jr, Matheus Cunha and Gabriel Martinelli in his front four, however none of them contributed to a goal in their defeat.

Even after France went down to 10 men, Brazil’s starting attackers couldn’t make a difference, only making things easier for Estevao this summer when it comes to nailing down a starting place.

He is facing serious competition. Both Raphinha and Vinicius are considered two of the best wingers in world football.

With that been said, it is the Chelsea man who has delivered more often on the big stage over the last 12 months. He has five goals in 11 appearances for his country.

Brazil are a nation who have relied on generational players. Whether that be Pele, Ronaldo or Neymar. They need someone new to step up, and that could well be Estevao.

While Estevao didn’t feature, Andrey Santos did start in the heart of midfield for Brazil, playing alongside Casemiro.

Joao Pedro can count himself unlucky that he didn’t start, and he didn’t have time to have an impact on proceedings after his second half introduction.

The highlight Chelsea player was Malo Gusto, who did start the game at right-back for France.

Up against Vinicius, the Blues star won that battle, and did his own hopes of regular minutes at the World Cup no harm at all.

France Edge Brazil 2-1 in High-Profile International Friendly at Gillette Stadium

France defeated Brazil 2-1 in an entertaining pre-2026 FIFA World Cup international friendly played on Thursday evening at Gillette Stadium. The match served as a significant test for both teams as they continue their preparations for this summer’s tournament.

Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for France in the 32nd minute with a superb chipped finish, moving him closer to becoming Les Bleus’ all-time leading scorer. Hugo Ekitike added a second goal early in the second half, giving France a 2-0 lead despite playing with 10 men after Dayot Upamecano was sent off.

Brazil, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, responded late through a goal from Bremer in the 78th minute, but could not find an equalizer against a resilient French side. The attendance at Gillette Stadium was 66,215, creating a vibrant atmosphere for this clash between two football powerhouses.

The game was part of the “Road to 26” series of international exhibitions leading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It marked the first meeting between Brazil and France since 2015 and provided valuable insights for both coaching staffs.

France head coach Didier Deschamps praised his team’s character, especially after going down to ten players: “The players showed great mentality and discipline. This is the kind of test we need as we build towards the World Cup.”

Brazil’s Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged the challenge: “France are a very strong team. We had moments where we could have done better, but this match gives us important information for our preparations. We will work hard to improve.”

The result leaves both nations with plenty to reflect on as they fine-tune their squads ahead of the world’s biggest football event.

England Manager Thomas Tuchel demands more from Chelsea star

Tuchel has made it clear that Palmer faces a fight to secure his long-term future in the England starting XI. The 23-year-old has endured a fragmented season due to a recurring groin injury, which has limited him to just 25 appearances across all competitions this term. The Three Lions boss believes the pressure is now firmly on the Chelsea man to translate his club form to the international stage and prove his fitness.

Speaking ahead of England's international friendly against Uruguay tomorrow, Tuchel elaborated on the challenges facing the Chelsea star. “Honestly, he has to show it because we have more evidence without him than with him so the pressure is on him,” Tuchel explained. “He had a difficult season but he has also had a difficult spell with the national team. He was only once available for us and when he was available, we decided to stick with the same squad so there is big competition for his best position, number 10. He really tries.”

The England manager noted that Palmer’s physical output had been compromised earlier in the season, affecting his natural movement and explosiveness. Despite these challenges, he has still managed to record 10 goals and three assists in all competitions for Chelsea this term.

“We saw good data lately, I saw him live against Arsenal and for the first time in a long time, I had the feeling his stride was back to the original lengths,” said Tuchel. “Before I felt he was not free and the stride was not long enough, the acceleration was not there and the movement was not free. I got feedback from him and from Chelsea that he felt during this game he was much, much better. He also had a very strong game against Aston Villa with a huge physical output that we could see and that was the first step.”

Despite the stern warning regarding competition, Tuchel has been encouraged by Palmer's attitude during recent training camps. The manager has been spotted sharing several warm moments with the midfielder, suggesting that while the performance standards are high, the personal relationship remains strong.

“When I hug him, that means he is smiling otherwise he would not get a hug,” said Tuchel. “He is in good spirits, he is open and he is communicating and is showing his quality. He is very engaged and these are very important steps to show the performance to be involved in the group and have connections within the group, so he will get his chance during the next matches.”

With a wealth of No.10 options available to England, including the likes of Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Phil Foden, Tuchel is adamant that reputations will not dictate selection. The physical evidence of Palmer's recovery is a positive sign, but the manager expects a relentless work ethic if the Chelsea star is to play a leading role at the World Cup.

“The physical output is matching the impression we have that there was something lacking but he is now back to full confidence and we see it in training. He is not pulling out or holding back,” Tuchel added. “That is what we wanted. We have had four training sessions and he needs to show up. He cannot hold back. He needs to understand he fights for his place and we will not hand anything to anyone on a silver platter. He did this in a very nice way, in exactly the right way.”

Rio Ferdinand picks Matheus Cunha over Joao Pedro in a debate over Brazil starter

The Brazilian has been a standout performer following his high-profile move to Chelsea. He has already netted 18 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

Matheus Cunha, now representing Manchester United after leaving Wolves, continues to be a vital creative hub. While playing in a more flexible role across the front line, Cunha has amassed seven goals and four assists in 28 league matches.

We believe Pedro should lead the line for Brazil, but Rio Ferdinand disagrees.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Represents, the former Manchester United defender struggled to pick a winner for the number nine position.

However, he settled on Cunha and supported this by mentioning his fluidity.

“If I was picking it today, it would be Vinicius Jr on the right, Raphinha on the left, and wow. Cunha? Joao Pedro? Igor? I’d probably go for Cunha just for the fluidity and the ability to rotate, Raphinha coming into the number nine area at times, and Cunha being able to roll out.”

It’s a valid point made by Ferdinand, but Pedro has made five more assists than Cunha this season, and has experience from playing out wide at previous clubs, so he could arguably fill the same role.

Alexandre Pato’s 2016 loan to Chelsea was a brief, forgettable cameo. Arriving with fitness concerns, he waited 64 days for his debut. He ultimately made just two Premier League appearances, totaling 131 minutes, with his solitary goal coming via a penalty against Aston Villa before returning to Corinthians.

And despite his slight allegiance to Chelsea, he’s backing Matheus Cunha.

“Hopefully, Neymar is OK, but if he’s not ready, I think it is Raphinha, Vini Jr, and Cunha as forwards.”

Moises Caicedo: “The Love from Chelsea Fans is a Dream Come True – I Want to Be Part of This Project and Win More Trophies”

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has spoken passionately about his deep connection with the club’s supporters, expressing his commitment to the long-term project at Stamford Bridge and his belief that there is still plenty more to achieve together.

The Ecuador international, who has become a cornerstone of the Chelsea midfield since his arrival, opened up about the special bond he feels with the fans. “The love from the Chelsea fans is a dream come true,” said Caicedo. “It’s a great feeling. Sometimes I go home and just smile. You always prepare for this moment in your career, and now I’m here at Stamford Bridge, feeling that support every single week and winning games alongside this incredible group of players.”

Caicedo emphasised his desire to remain a key part of Chelsea’s ambitious plans under the current leadership. “I really feel the love from the fans and the people at the club, and that makes me want to give everything back on the pitch,” he added. “I want to be part of this project. There’s still so much more to do here – we’re building something special, and I’m fully committed to helping us achieve it.”

Reflecting on his journey so far, the 24-year-old acknowledged the progress made while setting his sights even higher. “We’ve had some great moments, but I believe there’s still more to do and more to win at Chelsea. The Premier League, the Champions League – those are the targets that drive me every day. I’m hungry to keep improving, to keep fighting, and to create history with this club.”

Caicedo’s performances have drawn widespread praise, with teammates and coaches highlighting his leadership qualities, work rate, and growing influence in the squad. His comments come at a time when the Blues are pushing for silverware across multiple competitions, reinforcing the midfielder’s role as a driving force in the team’s resurgence.

Chelsea fans have increasingly shown their affection for the energetic midfielder, with chants and ovations becoming a regular feature at home games. Caicedo made it clear that this support fuels his ambition to become a true club legend. “It’s so good that the fans love me, but I know I’m still far from the level of what players like N’Golo Kanté or Claude Makélélé achieved here. They won so much. I’m going to keep working hard every day to get closer to that and leave my own mark.”

The statement underscores Caicedo’s loyalty and long-term vision at Chelsea, where he continues to develop into one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.
