Chelsea have reportedly joined Arsenal in keeping a close eye on Corinthians’ highly rated young defender Iago Machado.

According to Brazilian reports published by Lance, both Premier League clubs have been monitoring the 17-year-old centre-back, who has emerged as one of the promising talents coming through Corinthians’ academy.

Machado has attracted attention for his defensive consistency, positioning and ability to contribute in attack. He has also been training regularly with Corinthians’ first team and has recently become part of manager Fernando Diniz’s plans.

The teenager has now taken another significant step in his development, making his senior debut for Corinthians against Flamengo on September 13. Diniz praised the youngster after the match and highlighted his potential.

Chelsea’s interest comes as the club continues to monitor emerging young talent around the world. Arsenal were already reported to have been tracking Machado, with previous reports indicating that European clubs had shown interest in the defender earlier this year.

Machado is under contract with Corinthians until 2028, while reports have placed his overseas release clause at around €100 million.

For now, there is no indication that Chelsea have made a formal bid. The situation appears to be at the monitoring stage, but the growing interest from Premier League clubs underlines the reputation Machado is building in Brazil.

Chelsea fans could have another South American defensive prospect to keep an eye on.
