Chelsea have suffered a significant injury setback ahead of their Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting with Liverpool, with head coach Xabi Alonso confirming that João Pedro will be sidelined for several weeks due to a thigh injury.
The Brazilian forward picked up the problem during training ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed that he will miss Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures, although the club is yet to establish an exact return date.
João Pedro has been one of Chelsea’s most productive attacking players this season, recording five goals and three assists in seven appearances. His absence represents a considerable loss for Alonso as the Blues prepare for a demanding encounter at Anfield.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s cup fixture, Alonso acknowledged the importance of the forward but insisted his team must find a way to remain competitive without him.
“He has an injury in his thigh and he’s going to be out for a few weeks. Let’s see how many; we don’t want to predict that,” the Chelsea manager explained.
Alonso added that although João Pedro will be missed, the squad must focus on the players available and approach the Liverpool game with the determination to secure a positive result.
Emegha Boosts Chelsea’s Attacking Options
While João Pedro’s absence is a disappointment, Chelsea have received encouraging news regarding Emmanuel Emegha.
The 23-year-old striker is available for selection after making progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury. Since arriving from Strasbourg, Emegha has been working on his fitness at Cobham but is yet to make his competitive debut for the Blues.
Alonso confirmed that the Netherlands international will be included in the travelling squad for the Liverpool encounter. Estevão and Danny Welbeck are also available to provide additional attacking options.
Emegha’s potential involvement offers Chelsea another option in the final third as Alonso looks to navigate the absence of one of his leading contributors.
Mike Penders to Start Against Liverpool
Alonso has also confirmed that goalkeeper Mike Penders will retain his place for the Carabao Cup tie.
The Belgian made his Premier League debut against Tottenham on Saturday, but his first appearance ended in disappointment after he conceded an own goal during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Despite that difficult moment, Alonso has made it clear that the young goalkeeper continues to have the club’s backing. The Chelsea boss believes mistakes are part of a professional footballer’s development and expects Penders to use the experience as an opportunity to improve.
The manager stressed that the incident against Tottenham is behind the team and reaffirmed his confidence in the goalkeeper ahead of the trip to Anfield.
Chelsea will now look to respond to their weekend disappointment when they face Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. With João Pedro unavailable, Alonso will need his remaining attacking players to step up, while Penders will have another opportunity to demonstrate his ability between the posts.
