Jamie Carragher has raised concerns about Maxence Lacroix’s ability to adapt to a defensive system built around a back four following Chelsea’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Liverpool defender praised Lacroix’s performances for Crystal Palace when operating in a back three but suggested that the French centre-back appeared less comfortable when required to defend in a more aggressive, man-to-man system.

Carragher’s concerns centred on Chelsea’s defensive approach against Spurs, particularly the demands placed on defenders to step out of their positions and track opponents across the pitch.

He felt Lacroix looked more suited to the additional defensive cover provided by a back three, questioning whether the defender had the mobility and confidence needed to operate effectively in a back four while pressing opponents high up the pitch.

The analysis raises an important tactical question for Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso as he continues to shape his team's defensive structure. Lacroix’s performances could depend significantly on the system employed, the positioning of his teammates and the level of protection offered by the midfield.

However, one difficult performance should not be enough to define the defender’s overall quality. His ability to adjust to different tactical demands will be an important factor as Chelsea look to improve their defensive consistency.

Chelsea’s defensive dilemma: Should Alonso continue with a back four, or would a back three better suit Lacroix’s strengths?

What do you think, Chelsea fans? 💙
