José Mourinho’s decision to sign Didier Drogba for Chelsea in 2004 proved to be one of the most successful moves of his managerial career.

Mourinho recently recalled how his admiration for the Ivorian striker began during the 2003 Champions League campaign, when Porto faced Marseille. Drogba scored against Porto, and his performance left a lasting impression on the Portuguese manager.

According to Mourinho, he approached Drogba in the tunnel at half-time and jokingly asked whether he had any cousins in Ivory Coast who played like him, as Porto could not afford to sign the striker at the time.

Drogba reportedly smiled and told Mourinho that one day he would manage a club capable of bringing them together.

That opportunity came in 2004, when Mourinho took charge of Chelsea. Despite questions from others about Drogba’s suitability for the Premier League, Mourinho remained convinced that the striker was the right choice.

His confidence was rewarded. Drogba became one of the most influential players in Chelsea’s history, scoring 163 goals in 378 appearances and winning 14 major trophies during his two spells at Stamford Bridge.

The striker also became renowned for delivering in crucial moments, particularly in major finals, cementing his status as a Chelsea legend.

Mourinho’s decision to trust his instincts and sign Drogba remains a defining example of how a manager’s belief in a player can shape a club’s history.
