Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence in goalkeeper Mike Penders, insisting that the young shot-stopper has the quality to perform well while benefiting from the experience of Emi Martínez.
Alonso believes Penders has the ability to make a positive contribution to the team, while Martínez’s influence could help accelerate the youngster’s development. The Chelsea boss is convinced that both goalkeepers have important roles to play.
Speaking about the situation, Alonso stressed that Chelsea have full confidence in Penders and highlighted the value of having an experienced goalkeeper like Martínez around him.
The Spaniard has also praised Penders for his commanding presence and composure in possession, qualities that could prove important in Chelsea’s approach to building play from the back.
Alonso’s comments suggest that Chelsea view Penders as more than just a prospect for the future. The young goalkeeper is regarded as someone capable of contributing now while continuing to develop into an important player for the club.
With Martínez providing experience and guidance, Penders has an opportunity to learn from a goalkeeper who has performed at the highest level of the game.
For Chelsea, the combination of immediate ability and long-term potential offers encouragement as Alonso continues to shape his squad for the present and the future.
