Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has reaffirmed his confidence in goalkeeper Mike Penders, confirming that the youngster will remain in goal for the Blues’ upcoming clash against Liverpool despite his costly mistake in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Penders endured a difficult afternoon at Stamford Bridge after punching a corner into his own net, handing Spurs the advantage in a disappointing result for Chelsea. Mathys Tel subsequently scored the visitors’ second goal to secure all three points.
However, Alonso has made it clear that he will not abandon the young goalkeeper because of one error, insisting that mistakes are an unavoidable part of football and that the entire team must take responsibility for its performances.
The Chelsea boss also stressed the importance of supporting players who are still adapting to the demands of Premier League football, including Penders and fellow youngster Geovany Quenda, who made his first league start against Tottenham.
Alonso believes the team must stand together during difficult moments while working to improve collectively.
He also acknowledged that Penders will be eager to respond positively to the setback, adding that Chelsea must demonstrate their own ability to bounce back.
The decision to retain Penders against Liverpool represents a clear show of faith from Alonso as Chelsea look to put the Tottenham defeat behind them and return to winning ways.
For the young goalkeeper, the upcoming fixture offers an opportunity to learn from his mistake, rebuild confidence and prove he can handle the pressure of playing for Chelsea at the highest level.
