Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Mike Penders will remain in goal for the Blues’ upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool, despite the young goalkeeper’s costly error in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 21-year-old Belgian endured a difficult moment during Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Spurs at Stamford Bridge. After producing some impressive saves earlier in the match, Penders misjudged a corner and punched the ball into his own net, allowing Tottenham to take the lead.

Mathys Tel subsequently scored a second goal as Chelsea suffered a disappointing home defeat. However, Alonso has made it clear that he will not abandon his young goalkeeper after one difficult performance.

Speaking after the Tottenham game, the Chelsea boss reaffirmed his trust in Penders and confirmed that he would start against Liverpool.

“We keep confidence in Mike and he will be in goal against Liverpool,” Alonso said.

The Spaniard also stressed that mistakes are part of football and that responsibility for results must be shared across the team rather than placed on one individual.

Alonso added that Chelsea would continue to support Penders as he looks to learn from the experience and improve his performances.

“We win and lose together. We support Mike and he will want to prove he can do better.”

Penders Gets Another Chance to Respond

The upcoming Carabao Cup encounter at Anfield presents Penders with an immediate opportunity to put the Tottenham disappointment behind him and demonstrate his ability against strong opposition.

Chelsea are currently without first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who is recovering from a fractured jaw sustained during the victory over Everton. That injury has increased the importance of Penders in Alonso’s plans.

By confirming the youngster’s place in the starting lineup, Alonso has sent a clear message that he remains confident in his goalkeeper’s ability despite the recent setback.

Chelsea will now hope Penders can respond positively against Liverpool as the Blues look to bounce back from their defeat to Tottenham and progress further in the Carabao Cup.

The big question: Can Mike Penders silence his critics and deliver a strong performance against Liverpool?
