Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that the Premier League is the club’s biggest priority this season following their elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Liverpool.
The Blues were knocked out of the competition after losing 6–5 on penalties at Anfield, following a 1–1 draw in normal time. Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana missed the decisive spot-kick, allowing Liverpool to progress to the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the defeat, Alonso played down the significance of the cup exit, suggesting that Chelsea must now concentrate on their league campaign.
“This is the least important competition for us,” Alonso said, reaffirming that the Premier League remains the primary objective.
Despite the disappointment of going out, the Spaniard was encouraged by Chelsea’s performance, believing his players showed greater composure, courage and competitiveness against a difficult opponent away from home.
Chelsea must now quickly turn their attention to their next Premier League fixture against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31.
With the Carabao Cup no longer on their schedule, Alonso and his squad will be looking to put the defeat behind them and focus on improving their league position.
Chelsea’s message is clear: the Premier League comes first.
