Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised Mike Penders for his response to a difficult moment against Tottenham Hotspur, following the goalkeeper’s impressive performance in the Blues’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Penders endured a challenging Premier League debut against Spurs last weekend, when an attempted clearance from a corner resulted in an own goal. The mistake contributed to Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat, but Alonso continued to show confidence in the young goalkeeper.

The Belgian was given another opportunity against Manchester United and delivered a solid performance, helping Chelsea secure a valuable clean sheet.

Speaking after the victory, Alonso highlighted Penders’ ability to recover from the setback and praised his recent performances.

“Not just today, but he was solid against Liverpool. Today, he has shown a good level – another clean sheet. We need to keep going,” Alonso said.

The Chelsea manager also stressed that overcoming difficult moments is an important part of a player's development, particularly for a young goalkeeper.

“Mike has overcome the difficult moment that we had here last Saturday. This is part of the development of any goalkeeper, any player.”

Penders also impressed during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool earlier in the week, despite the Blues eventually being eliminated on penalties.

His performance against Manchester United represents another positive step as he continues to gain experience in Chelsea’s first team.

With Emiliano Martínez still sidelined, Penders will be hoping to maintain his form and establish himself as a reliable option for Alonso.

The Chelsea manager’s comments underline his continued belief in the young goalkeeper, whose response to adversity has provided encouragement for the Blues as they look to build momentum in the Premier League.
