Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has addressed the situations involving Cole Palmer, João Pedro and goalkeeper Mike Penders following the Blues’ disappointing defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking after the match, Alonso stressed the importance of maturity, patience and collective responsibility as Chelsea look to recover from the setback.
On Palmer, the Chelsea boss believes the attacking midfielder must remain composed when facing difficult moments. Although he expressed confidence in the England international, Alonso emphasised that learning from challenging experiences is an important part of his development.
Regarding João Pedro, Alonso revealed that the forward was still experiencing significant swelling after picking up an injury during the game. Further medical examinations were expected the following day to determine the severity of the problem and provide a clearer picture of his recovery timeline.
The Brazilian’s condition will be closely monitored, with Chelsea awaiting the results before making any further assessment of his availability for upcoming fixtures.
Alonso also offered his support to Penders following the goalkeeper’s costly mistake against Tottenham. Rather than placing the blame solely on the young shot-stopper, the manager insisted that the entire team must stand together during difficult periods.
He made it clear that Penders would have the opportunity to learn from the experience, while acknowledging that improvement must come from every member of the squad, including himself.
The Chelsea manager’s comments underline his determination to protect his players while maintaining high standards within the team. With important fixtures ahead, the Blues will need to respond positively, address their mistakes and demonstrate greater composure as they seek to get back to winning ways.
For Penders, the focus will now be on rebuilding confidence, while Chelsea supporters will hope for positive news regarding João Pedro’s injury and a stronger response from Palmer in the matches to come.
