Chelsea still have the potential to make a significant statement in the Premier League this season, according to Callum Hayes, who believes the midfield remains the key area that could determine how far Xabi Alonso’s side can go.

Hayes argues that Chelsea already possess enough attacking quality to trouble the strongest teams in the division. However, he believes Alonso would benefit from having a midfielder capable of breaking up opposition attacks, winning physical battles and providing greater protection for the defence.

“The attacking quality is already there. The midfield is the main problem,” Hayes said.

The comments come amid growing discussion about Chelsea’s defensive performances and Alonso’s tactical approach. Hayes believes the head coach has been adapting his methods to the players available to him, including moving away from an emphasis on building from the back after a number of costly mistakes.

According to Hayes, strengthening the defensive side of Chelsea’s midfield could give the team greater balance while allowing its attacking players to express themselves further forward.

He also believes Chelsea could look different once their squad is fully available following the international break.

“Once the full squad returns after the international break, Chelsea could surprise a lot of people,” Hayes added.

Chelsea’s ability to combine their attacking threat with greater defensive stability will therefore remain an important storyline as Alonso continues to shape his team.

For now, Hayes’ assessment is that Chelsea’s season is far from decided, with the midfield balance and defensive protection potentially playing a major role in determining the club’s ambitions.
