Former Chelsea defender and football pundit Jason Cundy has offered his assessment of Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Enzo Fernández, arguing that the Argentine midfielder did not fit naturally into Xabi Alonso’s tactical setup.

Fernández completed a reported £125 million move to Manchester City during the summer transfer window, bringing his time at Stamford Bridge to an end. The move followed months of uncertainty surrounding his future, with the midfielder ultimately joining former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca at City. AOL.com

Speaking about the decision, Cundy said he understood both Chelsea’s position and Fernández’s desire to leave.

“Enzo in this shape, I couldn't find a place for him in this team.”

Cundy’s argument centres largely on the demands of Alonso’s preferred 3-4-3 system. He believes Chelsea need midfielders capable of covering ground quickly, winning physical battles and closing spaces with intensity.

The former defender acknowledged that Fernández possesses several qualities but questioned whether his physical profile suits the role Chelsea currently require.

According to Cundy, one area where Fernández falls short is his ability to accelerate over short distances. He argued that Chelsea need a midfielder capable of producing quick bursts over five or 10 yards to close gaps and press opponents effectively.

Cundy pointed to Romeo Lavia as an example of a player who can provide some of those qualities, although he also highlighted concerns surrounding Lavia’s injury history. He also questioned whether Reece James possesses the same attributes in midfield, while noting that Moisés Caicedo’s injury has further complicated Chelsea’s midfield options. LiveScore

The debate comes as Chelsea continue to adjust to life without Fernández. The club did not bring in a direct replacement before the transfer window closed, leaving Alonso with several options for reshaping the midfield. Chelsea’s recent defensive struggles have also increased attention on the balance and physicality of the midfield in Alonso’s system. The Guardian

Interestingly, Fernández has made a strong start to life at Manchester City, where he has reunited with Maresca. His performances have already added another dimension to the discussion surrounding Chelsea’s decision to sell him. The Guardian

For Cundy, however, the issue is less about Fernández’s overall ability and more about finding the right midfield profile for Alonso’s tactical demands.

The situation leaves Chelsea facing an important question: whether their current midfield options can provide the energy, defensive coverage and physical presence required by the new system.
