Chelsea teenager Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli has made history after becoming the first player born in the 2010s to appear in a Premier League match.

The 16-year-old midfielder was introduced during Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat away to Brentford on Friday night, marking his first competitive senior appearance for the club.

Nicoll-Jazuli came on in the closing stages at the Gtech Community Stadium, but despite the difficult result for Chelsea, his appearance created a memorable personal milestone.

Born on 6 January 2010, the academy graduate became Chelsea’s youngest-ever player in the Premier League, making his senior debut at just 16 years and 225 days old. He surpassed the previous club record held by Jody Morris.

His promotion to the first-team environment has been a natural progression. Nicoll-Jazuli joined Chelsea as an Under-8 and has developed through the club’s academy system into a creative attacking midfielder. Chelsea also highlighted his achievements in the UEFA Youth League, where he previously became the club’s youngest starter and youngest scorer in the competition.

The youngster had already attracted attention during pre-season, featuring against experienced opposition and earning praise from head coach Xabi Alonso. The Chelsea manager previously described him as a highly talented academy player with qualities that are unusual to see in someone of his age.

His Premier League debut therefore represents another significant step in the development of one of Chelsea’s highly regarded academy prospects.

Although the night ended in disappointment for the Blues, Nicoll-Jazuli leaves Brentford with a place in Chelsea history — and a landmark that could be the beginning of a much bigger first-team journey.
