Xabi Alonso has heaped praise on João Pedro following the Brazilian forward’s outstanding start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Hull City, Alonso highlighted not only João Pedro’s footballing ability but also his maturity, personality and determination to continue improving.
“He has been top. Not just football-wise, personality-wise. His maturity, his desire.”
João Pedro has quickly established himself as one of the key attacking figures in Alonso’s Chelsea side. His performances during August earned him the Premier League’s Player of the Month award, following a return of two goals and two assists across Chelsea’s opening three league matches.
Alonso revealed that João Pedro has set himself ambitious targets for the season, with the 24-year-old determined to maintain his form and continue challenging for individual recognition.
“He has a very strong goal this year: to have a great season, to score many goals, and to be a nominee for not just this month but more months,” Alonso said.
The Chelsea boss also made it clear that João Pedro’s excellent form has not come as a surprise to him, given what he has seen from the striker both on and off the pitch.
“I am not surprised, but really happy with the kind of player that we have here with Joao,” Alonso added.
The praise underlines the growing importance of João Pedro to Alonso’s plans at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have already secured the forward’s long-term future, with the club previously confirming his contract extension through 2034 and Alonso describing him as a player with both leadership qualities and a strong desire to succeed.
João Pedro will now look to build on his impressive start as Chelsea prepare for their next Premier League challenge against Hull City.
