Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has warned his players that they will need to be at their best when Hull City visit Stamford Bridge this weekend, insisting that the newly promoted side deserve the same level of respect as any other opponent.

Chelsea head into Saturday’s Premier League encounter looking to respond after last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Alonso’s side have already shown plenty of attacking quality this season, including their dramatic 6-3 Carabao Cup victory over Leeds United in midweek, but the Chelsea boss knows Hull could present a very different challenge.

Hull have made an impressive start to life back in the Premier League. The Tigers have collected seven points from their opening three league matches and, remarkably, have yet to concede a goal. Their clean-sheet record against Manchester United, Coventry City and Aston Villa has immediately established them as a difficult side to break down.

Speaking ahead of the match, Alonso played down suggestions that Chelsea's attacking players could be impossible to defend against. Instead, he focused on the threat posed by Hull and stressed the importance of Chelsea approaching the fixture with maximum concentration.

> “We face tomorrow’s game with the same respect we did last week against Arsenal. They have seven points, no goal conceded, they will be hard to beat.”

Alonso also highlighted Hull’s ability to hurt opponents through transitions and set pieces, while praising the work being done by their coaching staff.

> “They have their weapons as well. With transitions, set pieces, they have the belief the coach is doing a great job. So it’s going to be hard and we’ll have to be at our best.”

The warning comes at a time when Chelsea are producing plenty of goals under Alonso but are still working on finding greater defensive consistency. The Blues scored 16 goals across Alonso’s first five competitive matches, including six against Leeds in the second half of their Carabao Cup tie.

For Chelsea, the Hull fixture represents an important opportunity to return to winning ways in the Premier League. But Alonso's comments suggest he is not taking the visitors lightly.

With Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, João Pedro and Pedro Neto among the attacking options available to Chelsea, the Blues will enter the game as favourites. However, Hull's early defensive record means Chelsea may need patience as well as creativity to find a breakthrough.

Alonso's message is clear: Chelsea cannot afford to underestimate Hull.

The question now is whether Chelsea's exciting attack can finally break down one of the Premier League's most stubborn defences.
