Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why Jordan Henderson was left out of the matchday squad and why Estevão Willian has been handed his first Premier League start of the 2026/27 season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues made four changes to their starting line-up for the Premier League encounter, with Henderson's absence being an enforced decision rather than a tactical one.

Alonso confirmed that the midfielder was unavailable because of illness, having developed a fever ahead of the match.

"He's ill. There's no injury, but he was not feeling well yesterday and today had a fever in the morning, so he was not feeling good enough to come with the team," the Chelsea manager explained.

Meanwhile, Estevão has been rewarded with a starting place after impressing in training and demonstrating his readiness to contribute to the team.

Asked why he felt this was the right moment to give the Brazilian youngster his first league start of the campaign, Alonso highlighted the player's preparation and commitment.

"Because he's ready. Because he's been preparing and training well to be ready any time, whenever he's needed, and today he's needed," Alonso said.

The Chelsea boss also expressed his hope that Estevão would enjoy the opportunity and make a positive impact against Manchester United.

The Brazilian is expected to feature in an attacking line alongside Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, giving Chelsea several options going forward.

However, Alonso remained cautious when asked which player would operate as the central striker.

The Spaniard suggested that Morgan Rogers could lead the attack but admitted that Chelsea have other possibilities available.

"It's too early to tell. It could be Morgan, but we have options," he added.

Estevão's inclusion represents a significant opportunity for the young attacker to demonstrate his quality in a high-profile Premier League fixture as Chelsea look to respond positively against Manchester United.
