Chelsea Women secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Roma in the UEFA Women’s Champions League at Plough Lane, with second-half goals from Ellie Carpenter and Kadeisha Buchanan sealing all three points for the Blues.
Despite enjoying control of the opening period, Chelsea found it difficult to break through a well-organised Roma defence. The visitors remained disciplined at the back and frustrated the Blues, who created opportunities but could not turn their dominance into goals before the interval.
Roma also failed to test Chelsea’s goalkeeper with a shot on target in the first half, but their defensive efforts ensured the score remained goalless at half-time.
Chelsea’s breakthrough arrived just six minutes after the restart. Introduced at the interval, Carpenter made an immediate impact by driving forward before combining neatly with Wieke Kaptein. The Australian defender finished from close range to put the Blues ahead.
The hosts continued to push for a second goal, although their finishing prevented them from extending the lead earlier. Roma resisted for much of the second half, leaving Chelsea to work hard to secure a more comfortable advantage.
The decisive moment came when Buchanan rose to meet a corner delivered by Kaptein, directing her header into the net to make it 2-0 and put the result beyond doubt.
The victory highlighted Chelsea Women’s patience and defensive solidity against a Roma side that offered a much tougher challenge than during their previous meeting, when the Blues recorded a commanding 6-0 win at Stamford Bridge less than a year ago.
With Carpenter providing the breakthrough and Buchanan adding the finishing touch, Chelsea delivered a composed European performance and continued their campaign with an important victory.
