I’m not entirely convinced by Xabi Alonso’s management of Estêvão Willian so far. The young Brazilian has shown enough talent and creativity to deserve more opportunities on the pitch, and I believe Chelsea could benefit from giving him a bigger role in the team.
Estêvão is a player who brings something different to Chelsea’s attack. His close control, dribbling ability, confidence in one-on-one situations and willingness to take on defenders make him an exciting option in the final third. These are qualities that can help unlock stubborn defences, especially when Chelsea need an injection of creativity.
Of course, Alonso has important decisions to make. Chelsea are competing at a high level, and young players must earn their places through performances, tactical discipline and consistency. There is also a need to manage Estêvão carefully as he continues to adapt to English football.
However, development requires more than occasional appearances and brief cameos. A young player needs regular opportunities to build confidence, understand his teammates and learn from his mistakes. It is difficult to judge what Estêvão can truly offer if he is not given enough time to influence matches.
My concern is not that Alonso should automatically make Estêvão a starter in every game. Rather, the manager should find a more consistent way to involve him, whether through starts in selected matches or meaningful minutes from the bench.
Chelsea have invested in exciting young talent, and that talent must be developed as well as protected. Estêvão may not deliver a decisive moment every time he plays, but the club needs to give him the opportunity to grow into the player many believe he can become.
My honest verdict: Alonso needs to show greater trust in Estêvão. Talent alone does not guarantee success, but talent without sufficient playing time can struggle to flourish. Chelsea supporters deserve to see what this young Brazilian can do when he is given a genuine opportunity to make his mark.
The question is simple: how can Estêvão reach his full potential if he is not given enough minutes to prove himself?
