Lionel Messi has officially closed the Argentina chapter of his extraordinary football career, bringing an emotional end to more than two decades of service to the national team.

At 39, Messi said goodbye to the Argentina shirt after the World Cup-winning captain made his final appearance in the Albiceleste’s 3–0 victory over Benin at a packed Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

It was a farewell worthy of one of football’s greatest-ever figures. Messi scored from the penalty spot and provided two assists, while more than 85,000 supporters gathered to celebrate a player who transformed Argentina's football history.

The occasion was filled with emotion. The match was paused in the 10th minute as supporters gave Messi a standing ovation in honour of his famous No.10 shirt. At the final whistle, Messi was visibly emotional as Argentina said goodbye to its captain and record-breaking star.

From Rosario to immortality

Messi's story began in Rosario, Argentina, before his teenage move to Barcelona changed the course of football history.

At Barcelona, he developed from a gifted academy prospect into the defining player of an era. His combination of extraordinary close control, acceleration, passing, vision and goalscoring turned seemingly impossible situations into routine moments of brilliance.

He eventually became Barcelona's all-time leading scorer and one of the most decorated players in club football.

His career included 10 La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies and four UEFA Champions League titles, alongside three FIFA Club World Cups and numerous individual honours.

And then there was the individual record that perhaps best summarizes his greatness: eight Ballon d'Or awards, more than any other player.

The records that define Messi

Messi's numbers are almost as extraordinary as the memories he created.

Among his major records and achievements are:

  • 8 Ballon d'Or awards — a record.

  • 46 team trophies listed by Inter Miami when his contract was extended in 2025.

  • 91 goals in 2012, the record for most goals scored by a player in a calendar year.

  • 474 La Liga goals, the competition's all-time record.

  • 50 La Liga goals in a single season, another historic record.

  • 496 goals in Europe's top five leagues.

  • 4 Champions League titles.

  • 6 European Golden Shoes.

  • 8 Pichichi Trophies as La Liga's leading scorer.

  • 2 FIFA World Cup Golden Balls, making him the only player to win the award twice.

  • 26 World Cup appearances, an all-time record.

  • 13 World Cup goals for Argentina.

  • Goals in every knockout round of the 2022 World Cup — group stage, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final.

Perhaps the most astonishing individual statistic remains his 2012 campaign, when he scored 91 goals in a single calendar year.

That record has survived more than a decade of elite football.

Argentina: heartbreak before glory

For much of Messi's international career, the story was complicated.

He carried enormous expectations because Argentina had previously been blessed by Diego Maradona, and comparisons between the two icons followed Messi throughout his international journey.

There were painful defeats, including major tournament final losses.

But Messi refused to allow those disappointments to define him.

His persistence eventually produced the greatest prize of all.

In 2021, he finally won his first major senior international trophy with Argentina at the Copa América. A year later came the Finalissima against Italy.

Then came Qatar.

The World Cup that completed the story

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Messi produced one of the defining tournament performances of his career.

Argentina eventually defeated France on penalties in the final, with Messi scoring twice during the match before converting his penalty in the shootout.

After years of criticism and disappointment with the national team, Messi finally lifted the World Cup.

Argentina had its champion.

Messi had his World Cup.

And the comparison with Maradona suddenly took on a different meaning.

His international trophy cabinet would later grow with another Copa América title in 2024. Argentina's official football association lists the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América among the defining achievements of his national-team career.

A final World Cup chapter

Messi returned for the 2026 World Cup and helped Argentina reach another final.

Although Argentina ultimately lost 1–0 to Spain, the tournament represented another remarkable achievement in a career that had already exceeded almost every expectation.

Messi subsequently confirmed that his time with Argentina had come to an end.

FIFA recorded his international career at 207 appearances before his farewell match, while his final appearance against Benin took his Argentina total even higher.

His final international numbers now stand among the greatest ever recorded for a men's national-team player: 208 appearances and 126 goals, according to reports following his farewell against Benin.

The Miami chapter

Messi's story did not end when he left European football.

In 2023, he moved to Inter Miami and immediately changed the profile of football in the United States.

He helped Inter Miami win the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, while collecting major individual recognition along the way.

Inter Miami also credits Messi with helping establish the club on a completely different international level. The club says he had accumulated 71 goals and 44 assists in 82 appearances across competitions at the time of his contract extension.

Rather than simply becoming a superstar attraction in the final stage of his career, Messi continued producing at an elite level.

More than trophies and statistics

Messi's greatest legacy cannot be measured solely by goals, assists or medals.

Millions of young footballers grew up attempting to imitate his movements.

His left foot became instantly recognizable.

His ability to dribble through several defenders became part of football folklore.

His passing demonstrated that creativity could be just as devastating as physical power.

And his evolution later in his career proved something equally important: greatness can change shape.

The explosive young winger became a playmaker.

The dribbler became a creator.

The goalscorer became a leader.

And eventually, the boy from Rosario became Argentina's captain and World Cup champion.

The end of an era

Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni summed up the feeling surrounding Messi's departure after the Benin farewell, describing it as a dream to have coached the player he regarded as the greatest in history and saying that Messi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy.

That may be the simplest way to understand Messi's place in football.

He did not merely collect trophies.

He changed expectations.

He made impossible goals look ordinary, turned defenders inside out, created opportunities nobody else could see and produced moments that will be replayed for generations.

From Rosario to Barcelona.

From Barcelona to Paris.

From Paris to Miami.

From Argentina's heartbreak to World Cup glory.

The journey is complete.

The records will remain.

The trophies will remain.

The videos will remain.

But above everything else, the memories will remain.

Lionel Messi leaves international football not simply as an Argentine legend, but as one of the defining figures in the entire history of the sport.

Gracias, Leo. 🇦🇷🐐
