Spanish football icon Pedro Rodríguez has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that lasted more than two decades.
Pedro confirmed his decision on October 7, explaining that he felt the time had come to begin a new chapter of his life. His retirement follows the expiration of his contract with Lazio at the end of the 2025/26 season.
“I feel that it is the moment to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” Pedro said in his farewell message, expressing pride in everything he achieved and gratitude to the people who supported him throughout his journey.
From Tenerife to Barcelona
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1987, Pedro began his football journey in the Canary Islands before moving to Barcelona's La Masia academy in 2004, aged 17.
He progressed through Barcelona's youth system and Barça Atlètic before making his senior-team debut during the 2007/08 season.
His breakthrough came under Pep Guardiola, when Barcelona were developing one of the greatest teams in modern football.
Pedro quickly became an important member of the squad alongside players such as Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.
Making history at Barcelona
The 2009/10 season was particularly special.
Pedro became the first player to score in all six official competitions contested by Barcelona in a single season — La Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
His ability to perform in important matches made him a trusted member of Guardiola's attacking unit.
One of his most memorable moments came in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley, when Pedro opened the scoring against Manchester United as Barcelona eventually won 3–1.
During his Barcelona career, Pedro won virtually everything available to him, including three Champions League titles, five La Liga championships, three Copa del Rey trophies, three UEFA Super Cups and two Club World Cups.
He scored 99 goals in 321 appearances for the Catalan giants.
A new challenge at Chelsea
In 2015, Pedro left Barcelona for the Premier League, joining Chelsea.
His first season in England was challenging for the club, but Pedro soon became an important attacking player.
Under Antonio Conte, he played a significant role in Chelsea's successful 2016/17 Premier League title-winning campaign.
Pedro also helped Chelsea win the FA Cup in 2018 and the UEFA Europa League in 2019, scoring in the Europa League final against Arsenal as Chelsea won 4–1.
Across his five years at Stamford Bridge, Pedro became a popular figure among Chelsea supporters because of his work rate, movement, technical quality and ability to contribute in decisive moments.
Italy: Roma and Lazio
Pedro moved to AS Roma in 2020, becoming the first player in many years to move directly between Roma and Lazio when he joined Lazio in 2021.
At Lazio, he enjoyed another productive chapter of his career and remained influential well into his thirties.
He continued to score important goals in Serie A and European competition before leaving the club when his contract ended in 2026.
International success with Spain
Pedro's achievements were not limited to club football.
He became part of Spain's golden generation and was included in the squad that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Spain defeated the Netherlands in the final, giving Pedro the biggest prize in international football.
Two years later, he was also part of the Spain team that won UEFA Euro 2012, completing an extraordinary international period for the country.
Pedro finished his Spain career with 65 appearances and 17 goals.
A career filled with major trophies
Pedro retires as one of the few footballers to have won the World Cup, European Championship and Champions League during his career.
His honours include:
🏆 FIFA World Cup — 2010
🏆 UEFA European Championship — 2012
🏆 UEFA Champions League — 2009, 2011, 2015
🏆 Premier League — 2016/17
🏆 UEFA Europa League — 2019
🏆 FA Cup — 2018
🏆 Five La Liga titles
🏆 Three Copa del Rey titles
🏆 Three UEFA Super Cups
🏆 Two FIFA Club World Cups
Across his club career, Pedro made hundreds of appearances at the highest level and became known as one of the most decorated Spanish players of his generation.
His career also produced a rare distinction: he scored in six different competitions for Barcelona during the same season, a feat that perfectly illustrated his importance during one of the club's greatest eras.
The end of an extraordinary journey
Pedro's retirement marks the end of a football journey that began as a teenager in Tenerife and eventually took him to the summit of European and international football.
From La Masia to Barcelona's golden generation, from winning the World Cup with Spain to lifting the Premier League with Chelsea, and later continuing his career in Italy, Pedro consistently collected major honours while maintaining a reputation for professionalism and humility.
At 39, the Spanish winger now leaves football with an extraordinary legacy.
Happy retirement, Pedro Rodríguez. What a career. ❤️👏
