Former Chelsea star Willian has opened up about the decision that saw him turn down a move to Tottenham before joining Chelsea, describing the choice as one of the best decisions of his career.
The Brazilian winger recalled waking up and immediately knowing that Tottenham was not the destination he wanted, despite holding the north London club in high regard.
“I woke up in the morning and said to myself, ‘No, I don’t want to go there,’” Willian explained.
The former Brazil international made it clear that his decision was not motivated by a lack of respect for Tottenham. Instead, he felt Chelsea represented the right opportunity for him at that stage of his career.
“I respect the club, I respect them a lot, but Chelsea was the best choice of my life,” he added.
Willian went on to enjoy a highly successful spell at Stamford Bridge, becoming an important figure in Chelsea’s attack and helping the club win major silverware during his time in west London.
His decision to choose Chelsea over Tottenham ultimately became a defining moment in a career that saw him establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished Brazilian wingers.
