Former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has opened up about his remarkable playing career, his commitment to education and his plans for life after football.

Azpilicueta, 37, recently reflected on the journey that saw him establish himself as one of Chelsea’s most respected leaders. After beginning his career at Osasuna and later moving to Marseille, the Spanish defender joined Chelsea in 2012 and went on to spend more than a decade at Stamford Bridge.

His dedication to learning remained a constant throughout his career. Azpilicueta pursued further education while playing at the highest level, including studying for an MBA in business management.

That passion for education even helped him deal with the pressure surrounding Chelsea’s Champions League final against Manchester City in Porto in 2021. Unable to take his usual pre-match nap, Azpilicueta chose to study instead before eventually lifting the trophy as Chelsea captain following a 1-0 victory.

The former defender explained that his parents had always encouraged him to take education seriously and that his studies were about personal development rather than simply preparing for retirement.

Azpilicueta also continued his education after leaving Chelsea, earning further qualifications in football management and sport directorship. His achievements have prompted speculation that he could eventually move into a senior administrative role within football.

However, the Spaniard appears in no rush to begin the next chapter of his professional life. After finishing his playing career with Sevilla last season, Azpilicueta says he is enjoying having more time with his family and experiencing a lifestyle that is very different from the demands of professional football.

After roughly two decades of travelling, training and competing, retirement has given the former Chelsea captain an opportunity to slow down.

For a player renowned for his discipline, professionalism and leadership, Azpilicueta's next challenge could eventually come away from the pitch—but for now, he is simply enjoying life beyond football.
