Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised his players for their improved performance after the break in their 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues delivered a much stronger second-half display to secure all three points, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer finding the net after a closely contested opening period.
Chelsea had struggled to establish clear control before the interval, with both sides creating opportunities. However, Alonso’s half-time instructions helped his team return with greater purpose and a clearer approach to the game.
Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute with an impressive individual effort before Palmer doubled Chelsea’s advantage from the penalty spot. The penalty followed a foul on Wesley Fofana by Lisandro Martinez, who was subsequently sent off.
Although United’s dismissal affected the balance of the contest, Chelsea’s improvement was already evident before the red card. The home side dominated possession after the break and created significantly more attacking opportunities.
Speaking after the match, Alonso explained that his message at half-time was to take greater control of the game through possession.
The Chelsea boss said his team needed to improve their use of the ball, reduce unnecessary turnovers and become more comfortable in possession. He also highlighted the importance of the tactical adjustments made during the interval.
Alonso believes the improved control helped Chelsea become more effective defensively, as well as creating the conditions for their attacking players to make a difference.
The Spanish coach also praised Pedro Neto for his work leading the attack in the absence of a recognised striker. Neto operated as Chelsea’s central forward, with Palmer, Rogers and Estevao Willian supporting him in attacking positions.
Alonso explained that Neto had worked hard in the role and was familiar with linking up with the players around him.
The victory will provide Chelsea with renewed confidence following their recent disappointment against Tottenham. Alonso will now hope his team can build on the performance and maintain the improved level of control and intensity shown in the second half against Manchester United.
