Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has admitted that his side must become more defensively reliable after another entertaining but frustrating Premier League match ended in a 2-2 draw against Hull City at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues once again produced an open and attacking contest, but their defensive weaknesses prevented them from taking all three points. Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers before Hull fought back, with Mohamed Belloumi scoring twice. João Pedro eventually rescued a point for the hosts.
Speaking after the match, Alonso acknowledged that Chelsea's entertaining style will mean little if the team continues to make the same defensive mistakes.
> “It may be entertaining… but I hope one day you say it's a BORING game and we win.”
The Spanish coach explained that some of Chelsea's problems have become recurring patterns that cannot be corrected overnight.
> “It kind of repeats some patterns we are making; takes time to fix them.”
For Alonso, one of the biggest concerns is Chelsea's inability to control matches after taking the lead. The manager believes his players must remain focused and competitive instead of allowing opponents to create opportunities too easily.
“We cannot concede so easily when we're ahead,” Alonso stressed.
The draw with Hull extends Chelsea's recent run of frustrating results and highlights an area Alonso knows must improve if his team are to compete consistently in the Premier League.
Despite the defensive concerns, Alonso remains confident that improvement will come with time. He has emphasized the need for greater solidity, concentration and consistency throughout the full 90 minutes.
Chelsea's attacking football has already provided plenty of excitement, but Alonso appears to be asking for something different now: **less chaos, more control and, most importantly, more wins.**
