Peter Schmeichel expects Chelsea to sack Liam Rosenior

Graham Potter lost 11 of 31 matches as Chelsea manager. Well, Rosenior has already lost nine games since taking over at Stamford Bridge. So, will the board sack Rosenior this summer, or possibly before?

Reports suggest Chelsea are sticking by Rosenior and in fairness to the former Hull and Strasbourg boss, Chelsea were improved against Man United. There was an element of luck to Man United’s 1-0 victory.

But Schmeichel is having none of it. Speaking to Premier League Productions on the weekend, the Dane believes Chelsea will sack Rosenior soon and expects an announcement in the not-too-distant future.

“I have no idea what the plan with him is. But going by what Glenn is saying and what Chelsea normally does, he’s probably gone,” Schmeichel said, when asked if he thinks Chelsea will sack their manager.

Chelsea are now seven points behind Liverpool in sixth place, and are seriously looking over their shoulder with the likes of Everton, Brentford and Tuesday’s opponents Brighton pushing for Europe.

Champions League qualification looks likely to be out of the question, unless Aston Villa can win the Europa League and finish fifth, which would mean sixth position then becomes a Champions League spot.

Rosenior looks set to remain in the hotseat even if Chelsea do not get Champions League football. But what happens if Chelsea fail to win European football whatsoever? It’s becoming an increasing possibility.

Financially, qualifying for the Europa League at least takes the edge off missing out on Champions League football, especially if Chelsea go deep into the competition. But none at all puts Rosenior’s job in doubt.

Liam Rosenior has offered a candid assessment of his future at Chelsea

Liam Rosenior has offered a candid assessment of his future at Chelsea following a damaging 1-0 defeat to Manchester United that leaves their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread. The Blues boss admitted he is in the dark regarding the potential consequences should the club fail to secure a seat at Europe's top table next season.

The narrow loss at Stamford Bridge has left Chelsea trailing 10 points behind the Red Devils and, perhaps more crucially, four points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool. With the race for European qualification reaching its climax, the inability to find the back of the net has become a glaring issue for Rosenior’s side, who have failed to score in four consecutive matches - their worst such run since 1912. When questioned about the potential fallout of missing out on the Champions League, Rosenior did not hide from the gravity of the situation. "The honest answer is I don't know," Rosenior said in his post-match press conference. "The honest answer is we're still fighting and we will address that situation at the end of the season, whatever the situation is."

The uncertainty in the dugout is mirrored by concerns regarding the squad's composition in the event of a failure to qualify. Star man Cole Palmer recently addressed his future in an interview with The Guardian, emphasizing that while he is committed to the project, the Champions League is vital for the club’s recruitment strategy.

"I've got no plans to move from Chelsea. We've still got a lot to play for," Palmer said. "We've got the FA Cup semi-final [against Leeds] and if we finish in a Champions League spot it puts us in a good position to sign players that we need. We spoke to the owners and they're sure of the players that are gonna do it.

The hierarchy at Stamford Bridge has been patient with Rosenior, but the historical demand for results at Chelsea means that "not knowing" the consequences might soon lead to a definitive decision. That remains to be seen in the days to come, but the result from the match against his former club Brighton is now all the more crucial. The clash feels like a definitive crossroads for the project.

Julian Alvarez tells Chelsea and other suitors he wants to play up front

However, according to TEAMtalk, the Argentine has informed Chelsea and all of his other suitors that he only wants to play through the middle at his next club.

Joao Pedro is currently Chelsea’s first-choice striker and has been excellent this season, but that is not the only potential barrier for the Blues.

The same outlet has claimed that Atletico are demanding a fee in excess of £100m for their forward.

After making huge losses, the Club World Cup winners may not be in a position to spend that sort of money on a single player, especially if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

This season, Joao Pedro has actually scored more league goals than Alvarez. In 32 Premier League appearances, the Brazilian has netted 14 times.

As for Alvarez, he has scored eight goals in 29 La Liga appearances. Pedro has played more minutes than Alvarez but still scores more goals per 90 minutes.

As per FotMob, Pedro scores 0.52 goals per 90, while Alvarez’s figure is 0.38. Whatever the case, the Argentina international is still a tremendous forward. If Chelsea have the opportunity to sign him in the next transfer window, they cannot say no.

The club will surely need Champions League football, though, and securing that now looks highly unlikely. Their rivals for the top five all won over the weekend, practically ending their chances of being in Europe’s elite competition next season.

Man United stars showed there is no love lost between the playing group and former team-mate Alejandro Garnacho following the Red Devils' 1-0 win over Chelsea

Garnacho was the focus of attention on Saturday evening as he went up against former club United just days after revealing he did 'bad' things before sealing his £40million move to the Blues last summer.

The Argentine had endured a public falling out with former United boss Ruben Amorim, revealing his frustration at only being brought on as a late substitute in United's dismal Europa League final defeat by Tottenham last May.

His brother Roberto also stoked the fire by posting a message on social media criticising the head coach for throwing Garnacho 'under the bus'.

Before he left United, he posted a picture of himself wearing an Aston Villa shirt with the name of Marcus Rashford on - his former United team-mate who was also out of favour under Amorim.

While no United star has gone on the record to air their disapproval of Garnacho's actions, their behaviour towards the Argentine after the final whistle on Saturday spoke volumes.

Fan footage showed Garnacho waiting on the Stamford Bridge turf as United made their way to the tunnel. In the clip, no visiting player engaged with the 21-year-old.

Later, veteran defender Luke Shaw posted an image of himself pushing Garnacho to the floor on Instagram, with the caption 'important win'.

His post was flooded with comments from United fans - including Steven Bartlett who said 'Ahahahahah' - as well as his own team-mates.

United captain Bruno Fernandes shared a GIF which read: 'That's a violation', while Alex Telles, who was a member of the United dressing room before leaving last summer, shared two fire emojis and a love heart.

Speaking candidly when asked by Premier League Productions if he regretted how his United exit panned out, Garnacho said: 'Maybe yes, because I loved that club. They gave me the confidence from the start, from Spain, to bring me to the academy, then they bring me to the first team, so it was like four or five years, and amazing love from everyone, from the fans, the stadium, everything was really good.

'It's just sometimes you have to change for the good of your life or the next steps. I only have good memories of Man United.'

After a rocky start to life under Amorim, the Portuguese had praised Garnacho's work to earn a spot back in his team, despite there being no natural fit in his back-three system.

The natural winger slotted into a No10 role, but things went south again and he fell down the pecking order once more.

That, he has said, was a key reason as to why he left - admitting that he made some questionable moves when he was out of the team.

'I remember in the last six months I was just not playing like before at Manchester United,' he said. 'I started to be on the bench, it's not a bad thing, I was only 20 years old, but in my mind it was like I had to play every game.

'In my mind, maybe it is also on me, I started to do some bad things. But yes, it was just this moment in life and sometimes you have to make decisions and I am really proud to be here and still in the Premier League at a club like this.

'Everyone knows the team we have and the things we can do. Sometimes, we have better moments or worse moments, I am proud to be here but with United, I have nothing wrong to say about the club, no one in the club or the team-mates. It's just a moment in life that changes and life continues. I have no regrets.'

Garnacho struggled on Saturday night. In the first half he failed to register a shot, create a chance or complete a take-on. He lost the majority of his duels and lost possession on four occasions.

He failed to improve on his contributions in the second half, with Chelsea losing 1-0.

Diego Simeone has emerged as the favourite to become Chelsea’s next manager

Diego Simeone has emerged as the clear favourite to become Chelsea’s next manager amid mounting pressure on current head coach Liam Rosenior, as the club’s disappointing Premier League campaign reaches a critical juncture.

Rosenior’s side have now suffered four consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring a goal, a run that has severely damaged Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification and intensified scrutiny over the 41-year-old manager’s position. While the club has publicly expressed continued support for Rosenior, internal concerns have grown significantly in recent weeks as results have continued to deteriorate.

Sources close to the club indicate that senior executives are now actively exploring succession plans. Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone, who has enjoyed a highly successful 14-year tenure in Spain, is understood to be the leading candidate to take over at Stamford Bridge should a change be made. Simeone’s contract with Atlético expires at the end of the season, and he is believed to be open to a new challenge in the Premier League.

Several other high-profile names are also under consideration, though Simeone is currently the standout option due to his proven track record of delivering consistent success and his experience managing at the highest level in European competition.

Chelsea Football Club remains focused on finishing the current season strongly and will make any managerial decisions in due course with the club’s long-term ambitions in mind.

Liam Rosenior admitted that Chelsea have a mountain to climb after a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United

Liam Rosenior admitted that Chelsea have a mountain to climb after a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United put another dent in their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Matheus Cunha scored the only goal as United tightened their grip on third place by overcoming their defensive problems at Stamford Bridge, heaping the pressure on Rosenior after a dismal run.

Chelsea are four points off fifth-placed Liverpool, who have a chance to pull clear when they face Everton on Sunday afternoon, and were toothless against a makeshift defence. They need a response when they visit Brighton on Tuesday but have lost four straight league games without scoring for the first time since 1998.

“It gives us a mountain to climb,” Rosenior said. “It’s not insurmountable but it gives us a mountain to climb and we have to go into Brighton with an idea that we have to win that game and kickstart the rest of our season.”

Rosenior, who was named Chelsea’s head coach after Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day, said he does not know what the consequences for the club’s transfer plans will be if they miss out on the Champions League.

“The honest answer is we’re still fighting and we’ll address that situation at the end of the season, whatever the situation is,” he said. “In terms of the game tonight, it’s a really, really difficult one to take because people don’t want to hear me say how well we played and didn’t win the game. We’re here to win.

“There are many elements actually that the process of underlying things that we’re looking into suggest that if you stay in this process we will win games of football. It doesn’t look like it at the moment but the reality is Manchester United have come in, had one shot, won a goal against 10 men and won a game 1-0 which should be pretty much impossible.”

Rosenior said that a devastated Estêvão Willian was crying at half-time after suffering a hamstring injury. Enzo Fernández also limped off with a calf injury in the second half. Fernández was not given the captain’s armband after returning from a club imposed two-game ban, with Moisés Caicedo leading the side out instead.

“The decision is we have a leadership group,” Rosenior said. “I feel like wearing the armband is an honour for this club. Enzo played like a captain today. I thought he was magnificent. I think that shows actually where he’s been with us all this while. I’m very, very happy with his performance. I’m very, very happy with him.”

Michael Carrick praised Ayden Heaven’s performance in central defence for United, who stood firm as they moved 10 points clear of sixth place thanks to their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2020, and was impressed with Kobbie Mainoo’s display in midfield.

“Coming here we haven’t had a great record,” Carrick said. “Records are there to be broken.”

Chelsea are second bottom in Premier League form table

After a promising start under Rosenior, Chelsea’s form has completely fallen off a cliff.

In fact, since gameweek 26, the Blues are second bottom in the Premier League table after winning just one game. It is a damning stat that has been shared by journalist Ben Jacobs on X.

Chelsea have not been scoring, which is why they have dropped out of the top five and down the form table.

In their four losses to United, City, Everton and Newcastle, Chelsea failed to score a single goal. Against United, Pedro Neto managed to create some chances, but no one was clinical enough on the night.

Rosenior’s attack is not the only reason why Chelsea are struggling so much in the Premier League right now, though. Defensively, they have been just as bad, if not worse, and the stats show that.

Chelsea’s defensive record since Liam Rosenior took over

Under Rosenior, Chelsea have only managed to keep one clean sheet in 12 games in the top flight, and that came all the way back in January.

It came in a 2-0 win against Brentford, which was Rosenior’s first Premier League match in charge.

Across the 22 Chelsea games that Rosenior has managed, the Blues have also conceded 35 goals. These numbers are outrageous.

That is not to say everything is Rosenior’s fault. Chelsea clearly have issues in central defence and in goal, which the club refuse to address. But the defending supporters saw under Enzo Maresca was never this bad, or at least not over a run of so many fixtures. Something needs to change and quickly.

Liam Delap: 'We have to put it right'

Liam Delap felt the Blues were hard done by in Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United, but there were elements of our performance that give him confidence we can return to winning ways against Brighton and Hove Albion.

We had 21 shots to the visitors’ four and racked up a significantly higher xG than our opponents. The woodwork denied us on three occasions, including when Delap crashed a header against the underside of the bar, but in the end it was Matheus Cunha’s clinical first-half strike that separated the sides.

‘It’s really disappointing because we feel we didn’t deserve that,’ said Delap after the game.

‘We were the better team. It’s a horrible feeling. Obviously we had one man go off and we needed to switch on and defend that moment, and we didn’t.

‘On another day we score four in the second half, but it was just one of those days. It's not like we're not creating chances. We're creating plenty of chances, but it's just that fine tweaking of our finishing and it going in.

‘We’re frustrated, but it’s on us and we have to put it right. We've got a big chance to do that on Tuesday.’

Moises Caicedo: 'We are going to do everything we can'

Moises Caicedo says Chelsea’s players will give everything as they look to keep our Champions League hopes alive, starting on Tuesday at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United on Saturday night, meaning we remain in sixth position, four points below Liverpool in fifth and seven behind fourth-place Aston Villa, with both clubs due to play their game in hand on Sunday.

There are five Premier League games remaining, with 15 points still up for grabs, and Caicedo says Chelsea’s players will not give up on their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

He said: ‘For sure everybody is disappointed because we wanted to win. We created a lot of chances but we couldn’t get the result. But we are looking forward because we have five games left and five games to win, to try to get in the Champions League.’

Chelsea had 21 shots to United’s four and enjoyed almost two-thirds of the possession during Saturday’s match. However, it counted for little as the visitors punished the Blues just before half-time through Matheus Cunha – with Liam Rosenior’s side down to ten men at the time due to Wesley Fofana receiving treatment on the sidelines following a collision with Robert Sanchez.

‘We had the opportunities to score but we didn’t have the luck tonight,’ Caicedo said. ‘Other things were good, we fought until the end to get the three points. Everyone is disappointed but we are looking forward.’

It has been a special week for Moi after the midfielder signed a new long-term contract which will keep him at the club until 2033, and he then captained the side against United in the absence of Reece James.

Despite being disappointed due to the result, when asked about signing his new contract, Caicedo said: ‘I am so happy and so proud of myself because of what I am doing and because I am going to be staying for a lot of years here. For sure we are going to win a lot of trophies.

‘Being captain here tonight was so nice, and it is always special to have the armband.

‘I am trying to help the team on the pitch and I will always try in every game.’

Our next game on Tuesday night will see Caicedo return to his former club Brighton, who scored deep into injury-time to draw 2-2 with Tottenham on Saturday and move up to ninth in the table, just one point behind us.

But Caicedo is determined his return to the Amex will see Chelsea return to winning ways.

He said: ‘For sure Brighton are a tough opponent but we are going to fight because we know we have a very good team and we are going to do everything we can to get the three points.’

Liam Rosenior revealed that Estevao Willian was in tears at half-time after limping out of Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United with a hamstring injury.

The teenage winger was hurt early on and had to be replaced in the 16th minute by former United man Alejandro Garnacho who was abused mercilessly by the away fans throughout the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

‘He was devastated,’ said Rosenior. ‘He was crying at half-time. I’m really devastated for him. It looks like it's his hamstring, and that's a moment actually when he's running through on their goal for a one-versus-one and pulls his hamstring in that moment. I hope Estevao comes back sooner rather than later.’

Enzo Fernandez also came off late in the game on his first appearance for two games after being dropped for disciplinary reasons, but Rosenior is hopeful the problem was only cramp.

Asked why he didn’t also make Fernandez captain in the absence of Reece James, the Chelsea boss replied: ‘The decision is we have a leadership group. I feel like wearing the armband is an honour for this club.

‘Enzo played like a captain today. I thought he was magnificent. He ran himself into the ground. He gave everything. He played forward. He was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.

‘I think that shows actually where he's been with us all this while. I'm very, very happy with his performance. I'm very, very happy with him. Even though tonight we didn't get the result that I felt we deserved or needed.’

Rosenior admitted that Chelsea have ‘a mountain to climb’ to qualify for the Champions League after losing to top-five rivals United.

Matheus Cunha scored from United’s only shot on target to keep Michael Carrick’s side on course for Europe, as Chelsea suffered a fourth straight league defeat without scoring for the first time since 1998.

‘It's not insurmountable, but it gives us a mountain to climb,’ said Rosenior. ‘It’s a really difficult result to take. The reality is Manchester United have come here, had one shot on a goal and won a game 1-0, which should be pretty much impossible.

‘I can't remember another chance they've had. We need to improve in that aspect if we're going to give ourselves any chance to win a game of football.

‘I think we've hit the woodwork four or five times. What we can't do is get into a cycle where we feel sorry for ourselves because we have to keep working. We have to turn this around.’

In contrast, Carrick was delighted with the way United bounced back from Monday’s defeat to Leeds at Old Trafford to boost their chances of Champions League qualification despite being without centre-backs Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs De Ligt and Leny Yoro through injury and suspension.

‘These are the moments we live for, for big games and big performances,’ said the United head coach. ‘That’s the beauty of football and the pure form of it. It was an important win in many ways – the suspensions, injuries, Leny pulling out quite late.

‘The coaches adapted and put a plan together and made sure everyone was in a good place. There were a lot of things to be proud of. We can play a little better at times, but we got the result.’

Kobbie Mainoo also had a starring role despite hardly training since missing the Leeds game through injury.

‘That was the best Kobbie has played since I’ve been back here,’ added Carrick. ‘To step up and show those sides to his game, he looked so composed and so calm. It was a good battle between him and Cole Palmer, and he showed good composure.’

United captain Bruno Fernandes was their man of the match once again after setting up Cunha’s goal, and he was delighted to take a step closer to Champions League qualification.

‘I feel three points closer,’ said Fernandes. ‘We have another game that we have to win. We know we need points to get that place secured, and we will do everything possible to be as quick as possible.

‘It's an amazing feeling for us, we had to bounce back, not just about Leeds, we had two games that we didn't win. We knew we had to make a great performance because Chelsea are a good side. It's important for us because our aim is to be top four – making distance is perfect for us.’

Liam Rosenior: 'A really difficult result to take'

Liam Rosenior says this evening's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United was a 'difficult result to take' after Chelsea controlled the game at Stamford Bridge and struck the woodwork on three occasions.

The Blues had the better chances across the 90 minutes. Estevao Willian shaved the post with an effort early into the first half before going off injured, and Enzo Fernandez also came close with a guided attempt from inside the United penalty area.

Unfortunately, moments before the half-time interval, and with Wesley Fofana off the pitch after receiving treatment, United broke the deadlock as Matheus Cunha fired home from inside the penalty area.

In the second period, Liam Delap struck the crossbar with a header, and Wesley Fofana did the same soon after. Moises Caicedo also came inches away with a powerful drive from distance, but it wasn't to be for the Blues.

'It was a really difficult result to take,' said Rosenior in his post-match press conference. 'They've had one shot on our goal when we're down to ten men because of an injury and they score.

'We have wave after wave of attack, put crosses in the box, and have moments that we don't take advantage – we've hit the woodwork several times.

'What we can't do is fall into a cycle where we feel like it's not going to be our day, or we feel sorry for ourselves because we have to keep working and turn this around.

The Blues had almost 60 per cent possession during the 90 minutes and registered 21 shots to United's four, aspects of our performance that Rosenior says can be built upon in the games ahead.

'People don't want to hear me say how well we played and didn't win the game,' he said. 'We're here to win, and there are many elements of the process and underlying things that we're looking into that suggest that if you stay in this process, we will win games of football.

'It doesn’t look like it at the moment, but the reality is Manchester United have come here, had one shot on our goal while we [momentarily] had ten men and won a game 1-0, which should be pretty much impossible.'

Injury updates on Estevao and Enzo Fernandez

Liam Rosenior has delivered updates on the fitness of Estevao Willian and Enzo Fernandez after both were forced off during our frustrating 1-0 defeat to Manchester United this evening.

Estevao started tonight's Premier League clash but, having almost broken the deadlock with a shot that shaved the post, the 18-year-old Brazilian was forced off in the 16th minute of the game.

Fernandez, meanwhile, played 88 minutes on his return to the side following a two-game absence. Unfortunately, the Argentine midfielder was unable to complete the contest and was replaced late on by Romeo Lavia.

When asked about Estevao's fitness in his post-match press conference, Rosenior said: ‘He was crying at half time; it was really devastating for him.

'It looks like it's his hamstring and that has happened in a moment when he's running through on their goal for a one-v-one chance – he pulls his hamstring in that moment. I hope Este comes back sooner rather than later.'

On Fernandez, our head coach added: I just saw him in the dressing room – I think it was his calf.

'I’m hoping it's cramp; he’s getting work on it right now because we want him, obviously, fit for Tuesday [against Brighton and Hove Albion.'

'He ran himself into the ground for the club tonight and I expect nothing different from a man of his stature and quality.

Mason Mount shushes Chelsea fans during defeat to Manchester United

United fans got on top of Alejandro Garnacho after he was brought on early for the injured Estevao Willian, and they were sent into delirium when Mason Mount entered the fray late on.

After having every touch booed during his cameo appearance, Mount had the last laugh as United left with all three points, and made sure to give some stick back to those in attendance at the same time.

Mount shushed the Chelsea fans late on, with their frustration stretching further than what they were seeing on the pitch.

Blues supporters had made their voices heard as early as 90 minutes before the game to protest the ownership, with reports stating as many as 500 fans were involved.

Previous efforts have fallen on deaf ears, however the poor run of form and perilous position the club find themselves in suggests this one may be taken more seriously.

Chelsea fans chant for Frank Lampard during defeat to Manchester United

As Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League continued to fade, Blues supporters had already made their feelings towards the ownership clear before the game with a protest as they marched to Stamford Bridge.

Inside the ground, Nizaar Kinsella reported hearing the supporters chanting in support for former player and manager Frank Lampard, rather than current boss Rosenior.

He said: “Chants for Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge after his promotion success with Coventry City.”

Lampard will be back at Stamford Bridge next season as Coventry City manager after they confirmed their promotion to the Premier League with a draw against Blackburn Rovers on Friday night.

The Englishman already has two stints in charge under his belt in West London, although there are large sections of the fanbase who would welcome him making it a hat-trick.

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes Lampard could take over again, however club sources are insistent that there will be no change in the dugout.

The Blues want to keep Rosenior even if they do not qualify for the Champions League, a prospect which now looks unlikely after today’s result.

Chelsea fans were not particularly keen on Rosenior coming in to begin with, and the drop off since the departure of Enzo Maresca speaks volumes.

The FA Cup could well be the saving grace for the current manager. They make the trip to Wembley next weekend to take on old rivals Leeds United.

Supporters are going to continue to make their voices heard though, and right now their frustration lies with the ownership and the manager.

Chelsea record an unwanted stat after defeat to Man United

Chelsea have lost and failed to score in each of their last four league games; only in November 1912 have the Blues ever endured a longer run in league history.

The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge turned toxic as Chelsea fell to a demoralising 1–0 defeat against Manchester United. Despite seeing plenty of the ball, Liam Rosenior’s side looked completely toothless in the final third, failing to turn possession into anything resembling a goal threat.

The road ahead for Chelsea is grueling, with critical matches against Brighton, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Arsenal looming. This difficult run comes at a time when the club’s Champions League aspirations are hanging by a thread.

The drop-off in form has made the prospect feel like a distant dream rather than a realistic target. Failing to secure a top-four finish would be catastrophic for the project, as the revenue and prestige of the Champions League are essential for attracting top-tier talent and complying with financial regulations.

The situation has now reached a boiling point for the supporters, who made their frustrations heard at the final whistle. Rosenior is struggling to find a solution to the team’s bluntness, and with every passing week, the players look more disconnected from his tactical vision.
